Gil Riggs, 78, of San Rafael, was killed Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in Grants, as the result of a motor vehicle accident.
He was born on Dec. 26, 1930, in White Oak, N.C. He was the only child of the late Edward Floyd Riggs and the late Annie Riggs McIntosh.
He is survived by two daughters: Deborah Riggs Worley of Apex, N.C., and Brenda Riggs Huffman of Shelbyville, Ind.; grand-daughters, Mariah Dunn of Elyria, Ohio, Molly Worley of Apex, N.C., SPC Maren Worley of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Karly Huffman of Shelbyville, Ind.; grandson: Kyle Huffman of Shelbyville, Ind.; and three great-grandchildren.
He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served for more than 20 years before retiring in 1969. After his retirement he ran his own air conditioning and refrigeration business in Yucca Valley and El Cajon, Calif. In the 1980s he moved to San Rafael. He was a longtime member of the American Legion, the Masons, and the Shriners. He was also an active member of the USCGC Courier Association, having served aboard this ship from 1957-1959 in Rhodes, Greece. His main hobby for which he had great passion was treasure hunting, in which he was active until his death.
