Funeral services for Raymond Willeto Arviso Sr., 97, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 26, at St. Paul Parish, Crownpoint. Burial will be on family land, Becenti.
Arviso died Saturday, May 22, 2010, in Crownpoint. He was born June 12, 1912, in Standing Rock, into the Water Flows Together/Zuni People Clan for the Mud People Clan.
Arviso was a life resident of Crownpoint. He attended Fort Wingate Boarding School and was a very highly decorated World War II veteran. He received a Silver Star Citation, Bronze Star Citation and a Purple Heart for gallantry in action against the enemy on March 26, 1943, in Germany. Arviso lived a full traditional Dine way of life, including raising a family, tending to livestock and his land and was a member of the Native American Church.
Survivors include his children, David Sandoval Arviso Benallie, Arlene Arviso, Mary Arviso, Jane Arviso, Tim Ray Arviso, Samson Ray Arviso, Kathrine Arviso, Raymond W. Arviso Jr.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arviso was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy James Arviso; sons, Glen Arviso, Ted Arviso Sr.; two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Samson Ray Arviso, Tim Ray Arviso, Raymond Arviso Jr., Christopher Arviso, Ted Arviso Jr., Darryl Emerson.
