Services for Phillip Augustine (Augie) Contreras, 61, of Cibola County, N.M., will include a Going Home Celebration and Memorial Service on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at noon, at the Church of Christ, 920 N. First St., Grants, N.M.
He was born on Aug. 28, 1953, to Phillip A. and Priscilla V. Contreras in the South Valley of Albuquerque, N.M.
Augie passed away on his 61st birthday and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014.
As a youth he was truly of the All-American variety - loving sports, the great outdoors, girls, his family, his friends, and his country. In his late teenage years he made a genuine profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and received eternal forgiveness for his sins, and was later baptized with the Holy Spirit.
His life became a life of adventure, working, and traveling, finding good hunting grounds and fishing holes along the way. His favorite states were Oklahoma, Texas, and his native New Mexico.
Augie became a man of amazing physical strength with an innate ability to design and build anything he chose - his own home included. This was a gift he had inherited from his father.
Augie possessed courage with a protector/defender mindset. He was a very loyal friend and made all of us laugh with his great sense of humor and his visits brought tremendous joy and excited happiness to his loved ones wherever they were . . . son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, friend extraordinaire.
His huge heart helped him recognize those less fortunate than himself, then reaching out to help them when able. Augie lived by a certain distinct code of honor.
He leaves behind his former wife: Tonya Contreras, mother of Justin-Joy Gorham; sons: Justin and Jason Gorham; his brothers: Ron and Sam Contreras, of Albuquerque; sister: Cynthia O'Leary, of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren: Ayden, Alexander, Andrew, Serenity, Kaiah, and Adalyn; nephew: Nicholas; nieces: Andrea and Angela; grandmothers: Betty, Charlene, and Laura; and Jade and Jasminn, Tiara, Samantha and Mike as well as his brothers and sisters in the Christian faith and friends everywhere.
