Pauline Koons

September 3, 1933 — September 25, 2011

Pauline Ruth Koons 78 of Grants, New Mexico went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 25, 2011 after battling pancreatic cancer. We are celebrating her life during a memorial service at the Lighthouse Christian Center, 1100 N. Franciscan, Grants, NM on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 1:00 pm. Burial will be held on Monday-October 3, 2011 at the Grants Memorial Park.

Pauline, also known as "Sister Koons", was a faithful child of God and served her Savior as a missionary for over fifty years. Her passion was to ensure others knew Jesus and His saving grace. Born in 1933 in Birmingham, England to Rev. William John and Dora Victoria Ashley-Cole, she attended boarding school in North Wales from the age of eleven, during World War II and until the age of sixteen, when her family moved to the United States in 1949, settling in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from Franklin High School and earned a teaching degree from Portland State University. After teaching for a year, Pauline attended Prairie Bible Institute in Canada. She was called of the Lord to serve as a missionary and upon graduation moved to Houck, Arizona where she served at Good Shepard Mission and then met her soon to be husband, Rev. Thomas Koons. They were married for over forty-five years until his passing in July 2004. Brother and Sister Koons both served as missionaries with the Assemblies of God in Chandler, Old Sawmill, and Window Rock, Arizona and various locations in New Mexico including Navajo and Crystal, ministering to the Navajo Nation. Sister Koons learned to read and speak the Navajo language and held classes teaching others. She was notorious for handing out gospel tracts and was known by many as the "paper lady". Pauline always made it a point to tell others about Jesus, especially children.

Sister Koons is preceded in death by her mother, father, and husband.

Her loving survivors include two sisters Joy Sylvester of Oregon, Melanie Ashley-Cole of Washington, and one brother, James Ashley-Cole also of Washington. She also is survived by one son, Paul Koons and wife Erica of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has three granddaughters Jade, Erica Marie, and Randa and two grandsons Michael and Charlie all of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
