Deacon Lawrence (Larry) J. Valdo, a devoted Catholic and loving family man, passed away peacefully at his home in Acomita, NM, on January 13, 2025. Born to Sarah and Julio Valdo (both deceased) on November 30, 1937, Larry dedicated his life to service, faith, and family. He is preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Shane Jaramillo.
Larry's professional journey began after graduating from Grants High School in 1957. He entered the health field at Bernalillo County Medical Hospital as an Admitting Clerk, while also pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at St. Joseph College. His career continued as a Lab Technician at Lovelace Hospital and later with the Department of Indian Health Services in Shiprock, New Mexico.
A proud veteran, Larry served in the US Army Reserve Unit, and after his honorable discharge, he furthered his education by earning a master’s degree in Hospital Administration. He generously shared his expertise as a Physician’s Assistant at Gallup Indian Hospital before transferring to the Acoma, Canoncito, Laguna Hospital on the Acoma Reservation, from which he retired at the age of 70.
Larry was deeply committed to his faith and served many years in voluntary roles within Catholic organizations and ministries. Answering his spiritual calling, he completed the Deaconate Training Program and was ordained as a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Gallup on September 13, 2003, in Grants, New Mexico.
He is survived by his son, Jeffrey; daughter, Gaylene Ortiz; brother, Mike and wife Cindy; sister, Dale Sanchez; nephew, David; nieces, Veronica, Camille, Sarah, Sharlyn; along with numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, and other cherished family members.
A Rosary and funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 21, at 5 PM at St. Anne Church in Acomita. The funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, January 22, at 10 AM, followed by interment at Mount of Peace in McCartys. The Most Reverend James Wall, Bishop of the Diocese of Gallup, will preside.

Larry Valdo’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith and devotion to his family and community. He will be dearly missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him.
