Kathy Weigl

It is with great sadness we announce the death of Kathy Weigl: wife, mother, Oma, and friend. It will be forever said that she was generous, strong, creative, used her voice, and that she put others before herself. She had a great sense of humor and loved sarcasm; if you know, you know.

Kathy was born October 27, 1962, in Gamerco to Leslie Schrimsher and Pauline Soderstadt. She married Kevin Weigl on October 11, 1986, and they raised two sons together: Nathan and Justin. In addition to raising their family together with Kevin, she helped run C&R Refrigeration for 32 years. She was involved with the community, helped with class reunions, and loved to travel. Her family was one of her greatest treasures.

While raising her two sons, she was their biggest fan and champion. She loved to teach and homeschooled both boys until they were almost in high school. Anytime they had an accomplishment, large or small, she was quick to show how proud she was through word of mouth, celebrations, and even placing ads in the newspaper. She taught them to be involved in their community with projects like the Playground of Dreams and getting a skate park in Gallup. Any activity her boys found an interest in, Kathy made sure they had an opportunity to explore each and every one. Kathy often mentioned things she did not have while growing up, and she tried to make sure her boys never felt like they went without. She was incredibly creative and even when she began having seizures and could no longer drive, she turned outings into adventures and challenges. Through her resilience, grit, and determined spirit, her boys never felt like they went without. 

Kathy was very thoughtful and always put others first. She was generous and loved to craft, bake, and create. Whenever she heard of someone having a baby, she was quick to sew blankets or something unique and special for each family. Many will remember her blueberry pie and baklava. She was always willing to give her time and help to anyone and everyone who needed it. 

She loved hunting for bargains, going to garage sales, and finding amazing deals everywhere she went. She was opinionated and was passionate about many things in life, and loved music and dancing. Kathy enjoyed going to concerts with Kevin. 

You could often find Kathy reading a book, sewing, taking pictures of everything that caught her eye, traveling, and connecting with family. She loved adventure and went on some great trips to Hawaii and Seattle where she sent postcards, pictures, and gifts to her people. She became very interested in genealogy and discovered many relatives she didn’t know she had. She was a connector; she wanted to know who her family was in order to care for each of them.

Some of the people she cared the most for were her grandchildren: William, Emilio, Weston, Maverick, and Ellie. It delighted her to create for them, take pictures of them, and hear about things they were doing.

She is preceded in death by her mother Pauline Schrimsher and grandmother Geraldine Soderstadt, brother Charlie Schrimsher, and grandson Maverick Weigl.

Kathy is survived by her husband Kevin of 38 years, sons Nathan (wife Mallory) and Justin (wife Jessica), grandchildren William, Emilio, Weston, and Ellie, brothers John, Ed, and Jessie (Con) Schrmisher, sister Joyce Sanchez, and many other family members and friends.
