Gordon was born Feb. 10, 1929, to Fred and Dorothy McKee. He grew up in Peoria, Ill.

Gordon passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home, in Grants.

A track and football star in high school, he graduated from Woodruff High School in 1947. He received his Doctor of Optometry from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He practiced optometry in Duluth, Minn.; Glenco, Minn.; and Excelsior, Minn, where he and his first wife Hazel raised four children.

He served in several officer positions in the Minnesota Optometric Association and co-authored several publications.

After moving to Houston, Texas, he taught Optometry at the University of Houston for sixteen years. A shift in careers and additional college course work took him to family practice counseling. He had a private counseling practice in Galveston, Texas; Santa Fe, N.M., and also worked as a counselor in Las Vegas, N.M., and Farmington, N.M.

He retired to travel and enjoy life with his soul mate, Thelma Lee, but was stricken ill and has spent the last three years in the hospital or nursing home.

Gordon was an avid photographer, played piano, loved traveling, camping, fishing, downhill skiing, and he loved to sail in Galveston Bay and took lessons to become a pilot. Previously he had been a Boy Scout leader, was involved with Lions Club, Rotary International, and sang with the Barbershoppers.

He is survived by his loving partner and care-giver: Thelma Lee, of Grants; son: Bruce McKee and wife, Suzanne, of Mason City, Iowa; daughters: Sandi Walter, of La Verne, Calif.; Karen McKee Smith, of La Porte, Texas; and Cyndi Poole and her husband, Kevin, of Kingsland, Texas; brother: Patrick McKee and wife, Leslie, of Brookfield, Wis.; as well as nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was also very close to Thelma's daughter Laura and husband, John Bezzeg, of Grants; son Mark and wife, Connie Lee, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren on that side of the family.

He was preceded in death by two wives: Hazel Baso McKee and Sandy McCrory McKee.
