Ernestine Yazzie, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother, who graced the world with her presence from December 20, 1959, until her peaceful passing on March 29, 2025, leaves behind a legacy marked by love, laughter, and cherished memories. Born in the serene surroundings of Bluewater Lake, Ernestine's spirit was akin to the natural beauty she admired on her many walks, where she found solace and inspiration amidst the wonders of nature.
With a heart full of warmth, Ernestine enjoyed countless moments filled with joy, particularly in the company of her grandchildren. The echoes of their laughter during their playful interactions remain a testament to the deep bond she fostered with them. Her love extended beyond state lines as she frequently traveled to Oklahoma and Phoenix, Arizona, to visit her daughter, Christina Smith, and her grandchildren—an embodiment of her devotion to family.
Ernestine was a woman of many interests; she relished engaging in games of cards, solving crossword puzzles, and was always eager to share a hearty laugh with those around her. Her vitality and zest for life drew others to her, making her a beacon of light in the lives of her beloved sisters and brothers—Tommy and Jimmy Yazzie, and Marie Singer—who now bear the heavy yet beautiful burden of holding her memory close to their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Begay and Peter Yazzie, and her cherished son, Bennett Smith. Their absence leaves an indelible mark on her loved ones, yet they find comfort in the knowledge that their bonds persist beyond this earthly realm.
The funeral service to celebrate Ernestine's life will take place at Oasis Church in Prewitt, New Mexico, on April 3, 2025, commencing at 10:00 AM. Following the service, she will be laid to rest in the Prewitt Community Cemetery, where her family and friends can gather to honor her enduring spirit and the joy she brought into their lives.
In remembering Ernestine Yazzie, let us not only mourn the loss of a wonderful soul but also celebrate a life richly lived, full of laughter, love, and unforgettable memories—a true inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
