Memorial Services for Austin Milliken will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Compassion Mortuary in Grants, NM.
Following the service, in his honor, a Celebration of Life will be held at Thoreau High School in Thoreau, New Mexico. Austin loved a good potluck so in honor of him, we will have a potluck during his Celebration of Life. Please bring your favorite main dish or dessert. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Austin Milliken, age 81, of Thoreau, NM passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 30th, 2017. He was born on February 11th, 1936 in Murrieta, Oklahoma to Horace Clifton Milliken and Carrie (Hughes) Milliken.
Austin graduated from Lone Grove High School, Lone Grove, Oklahoma in 1956 where he played football and baseball. He attended Eastern Oklahoma College in Willburton, Oklahoma where he played football and baseball. He continued his education at Southeastern Oklahoma State College in Durant, Oklahoma, where he graduated and receive his teaching degree in Health and Physical Education.
Austin worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) for 32 years. During the 32 years with BIA, he was a teacher, a coach and a mentor. After he retired from the BIA, he continued educate, coach and mentor students as a substitute teacher for the McKinley County School District.
He is survived by his Loving Wife of 56 years: Virginia (Redd) Milliken of Thoreau, New Mexico; Children: Vivian Grantz and Husband Jim of Colton, California, Shelia Willie and Husband Ronald of Thoreau, New Mexico, Angie Milliken of Gallup, New Mexico, Calvin Milliken of Thoreau, New Mexico, Theresa Milliken of Salt Lake City, Utah, Cynthia Asbury and husband James of Dodge City, Kansas and George Milliken and wife Rhonda of Thoreau, New Mexico; Sisters: Jerry Arnold of Hilton, Oklahoma and Jean Searles of South Dakota; 19 Grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren and many more who thought of him as Grandpa Milliken.
He is preceded in death by his Parents: Horace Clifton Milliken and Carrie (Hughes) Milliken; Brothers: Tommy Milliken and Dick Milliken; Sister: Rosie Vaughn; and 4 grandsons.
