He passed away on Nov. 13, 2008, after a long illness. He was born on Jan. 11, 1920, in Morgan, Texas.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Wilmirth Clawson Payne; daughter, Sheila Cox and husband, Elvis of Grants; Linda Yager and husband, Thomas of Dighton, Kan.; daughter-in-law, Kathy Tietjen Payne of Rigby, Idaho; Virginia Rowley and husband, Theodore of Bluewater; 22 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; sister Kathleen Gossett of Grants; brother Jim Lee Payne of Deming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine Thompson Payne and Edward G. Payne; brother, Cecil Payne; sons, Edward L "Teddy"; Allen Jr.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He served as a motor machinist's mate in the Navy during World War II. Upon returning, he worked at Corley Motor Company, the Ford dealership and then Stanley and Card Farm. He opened Allen's Garage on Route 66 in January 1955. A source of pride was the fact that his former employers, the Ford garage and Stanley and Card were among the good customers he attracted to his new venture. Allen's heart was always in farming and his impossible dream came true when he purchased irrigated land from Fred Freas. He worked mornings and evenings on his farm and days in the shop until it closed. He continued farming until he was 75 years old. The corn and hay he raised were in popular demand. In 1975 he was awarded Farmer of the Year by LAVA NRCD.
