Visitation for Alfonso Lopez 82 of Grants, New Mexico will be held Tuesday-April 29, 2014 between 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church in Grants, New Mexico.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday April 30, 2014, at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church, followed by Commitment Services at the Grants Cemetery. With Military Honors by the VFW Lodge 3221.
Alfonso Lopez, 82, died peacefully at home on April 26, 2014, with his family by his side. He was the son of Herman and Natividad Lopez. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a Sargent in the 17th Armed Engineering Brigade, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. After the war he worked as a miner in Bingham, Utah and Grants, New Mexico and for the past 27 years he was the owner of the Lopez Bonding Company. He retired in 2012.
His Korean War Memorial, which he built several years ago in his front yard on Zuni Canyon Road, was a favorite spot for many Korean War veterans in the Grants area to sit and reminisce. This past October, Alfonso was selected to travel to Washington, D.C. to visit the war memorials, as part of the Honor Flight Network.
Alfonso was an avid outdoorsman. He enthusiastically looked forward to deer and elk season and spent many long weeks camping in the mountains with his sons, grandchildren, and beloved nephews. He devoted much of his time to exploring the great outdoors with his grandchildren.
Alfonso is survived by his children, Rose Romero, Forth Worth, Texas, Alfonso Lopez, Jr. and his wife Lorena, Mission, Texas, Victoria Cervantes and her husband Mark, Fort Worth, Texas, Teresa Masters and her husband Allen, Tijeras, Veronica McDermott and her husband Scott, Lusby, Maryland, Raul Lopez and his wife Doreen, Milan, and Anthony Lopez and his wife Melissa, Grants, New Mexico. He was a beloved grandfather to 12 grandchildren; Christopher, Martin, Augustine, Jessica, Erica, Mayling, R.J., Hope, Tamera, Ashley, Manuel and Pete. Seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rose of Penasco, New Mexico and Teresa of Cypress Gardens, California, also survive him. His beloved wife of 55 years, Hope Lopez, Julie, his beloved granddaughter, his parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. His family and friends will dearly miss him.
